Falciani’s SwissLeaks – The Great Bank Data Robbery

The web project “Falciani´s SwissLeaks – The Great Bank Data Robbery” uses the fascinating story of whistleblower Hervé Falciani to offer an inside view into the complex issue of tax fraud to a broad public in an emotional and playful manner. Through a combination of text, video and interactive elements, the user experiences how Falciani’s spectacular disclosures affect him personally; additionally he is continually confronted with his own attitude towards tax compliance, betrayal and whistleblowing.

“Falciani’s SwissLeaks” uses the well established format of the scroll documentary and focuses on strong storytelling: Falciani’s escape across Europe serves as a thread for a linear narrative in five chapters. The user gets to know the charismatic yet contradictory figure Falciani and learns, how his data theft at the private bank HSBC turned the computer nerd into the most important whistle-blower of the finance.

The linear narrative is interrupted by interactive elements in every chapter: Easily accessible info-graphics and visualizations show the connection between the extent of international tax fraud and the individual user, so that he can grasp background information and proportions of the topic. Furthermore, each of the five chapters ends with a poll the user can use to vote on the subjects dealt with previously and compare his attitude with the other users in real-time.

The scroll documentary is distinguished for it’s appealing and high quality design that communicates the exciting and charged atmosphere of the story. That’s how the website stands out of from the usual articles on the topic and approaches especially those users, who are no economic experts. The goal is to bring the topic of tax fraud to a broad audience.

The usability of the website is designed in a way that continually shows the users the progress in the narration: At the top of the screen a bar is located that marks the current point within the five chapters. Furthermore, a background animation clears up Falciani‘s location on his journey through Europe.

Falciani’s story is international: He stole the explosive HSBC‘s customer information in Switzerland, traveled to Lebanon, fled to France and further on to Spain, with Swiss investigators on his trail. His list covered data of customers from more than 200 countries. To stress the international aspect, some of the interactive elements are created according to the country, from which the user accesses the website: The browser recognizes the users country and shows corresponding information first; in addition he can compare the information to that of other countries.

In this way the web project is interesting for different national and international partners, as we´re also cooperate with the spanish newspaper El Diario and the catalan broadcaster TVC.
