Make Love

The successful Grimme Online award nominated timedial documentary format “MAKE LOVE” is entering its second season, starring Ann-Marlene Henning, author of the worldwide best seller “Make Love” and the new book “Make More Love”.

In our allegedly enlightened society where sex is omnipresent in the public sphere, the true taboos are the silence, insecurities and knowledge gaps within our private relationships. The documentary series MAKE LOVE takes us into the authentic and individual realities of different couples between the ages of 20 and 100 alongside sexologist, couple therapist and best selling author Ann-Marlene Henning. Her expertise, tact and exhilarant naturalness allow Ann-Marlene Henning to help the couples (and us) break the silence.

While interacting with Ann-Marlene Henning, the partners learn to really perceive themselves and their significant other, thus finding true intimacy. Using model couples, MAKING LOVE additionally shows many lesser known facts about good sex – be it alone or in pairs.

Our documentary format "MAKE LOVE" with sexologist Ann-Marlene Henning is nominated for the German Television Award 2017 in the category „Best Infotainment". In all four seasons the successful format dares to address the great taboos of sexuality and partnership. MAKE LOVE is the first TV programme that brings the authentic and individual realities of sex into public TV and also discusses homosexual sex in the nominated 4th season. The 4th season was realized by the directors Tristan Ferland Milewski and Janina Hahn and the editors Friederike Haedecke and Johannes Geiger. It was broadcasted in July 2016 on ZDF. In July 2017 two more episodes of MAKE LOVE will follow for ZDF. The format started in 2013 on MDR and SWR and in 2015 Peter Arens commissioned it for ZDF’s main programme where the format was developed further. In 2014, the MAKE LOVE web feature www.make-love.de was nominated for the Grimme Online Award and the Impact Award. Besides MAKE LOVE, the TV shows „Galileo“ and „Das Jenke-Experiment“ are nominated in the category „Infotainment“. Next to the Grimme Award, the German Television Award is one of the most important awards of the TV industry and is awarded by the broadcasters Das Erste, ZDF, RTL and Sat. The award ceremony is held on February 2, 2017 in Cologne. We want to thank the great MAKE LOVE TEAM – without your commitment and skills the programme would not be the same! Make Love

The Episodes of Season 2:

Episode 1 “Sex beyond 40”

The middle years are a time of many changes, akin to a second puberty. Many things do not work like they used to. Bodies and sexualities are changing. When hormones do not serve their supportive purpose to the fullest any more, it becomes increasingly important for women and men to train or retrain sexual pleasure.

This is exactly the phase in which Silke (50) and Andreas (47) find themselves. They have fallen in love during both their climacteric periods, and they are facing the challenge of dealing not only with a new physicalness, but also with a new couple’s sexuality.

Ann-Marlene Henning gives advice on how to regain control of our bodies – even if the hormones don’t work like they used to. With a real model couple, Ann-Marlene Henning demonstrates positions that work especially well for older couples. On top of this, she chats with people between their mid-50s and 80s about the possibilities of a delightful sexuality and butterflies in the tummy up to an old age.

Episode 2 “Sex instead of Porn”

There are around 400 million websites with pornographic content. 300 new ones join them every day. Germans are the number one porn consumers.  In times of internet and smartphones we can barely escape these images – even if we wanted to. It is getting harder and harder finding one’s own sexuality. This is exactly what Britta (24) and Matthias (25) are experiencing right now. They always fall back into the same pattern when having sex.

Ann-Marlene Henning demonstrates with a real model couple how sex might look beyond the gymnastic exercises we know from porn. She shows how real intimacy develops betweens partners. At the hairdresser, she chats with waiting customers about the importance of masturbation for individual sexuality. She takes us back into the past with the country women: How did one get informed about sex in prude post-war Germany, before the internet’s information explosion?

Episode 3 “When men want less”
It is completely normal for one person to want more sex than the other in a relationship. But if this person is the man, it is still a hot button topic for many. Experts consider the sexual retreat of men a phenomenon of our times. According to international studies, this issue concerns around 15% of all men.

This is precisely what Mike (44) and Janine (38) are dealing with. They have been a couple for seven years. Janine feels rejected, because she is always the one taking the initiative. Mike on the other hand experiences sex as additional work when he comes home from his job.

Ann-Marlene Henning talks to fire fighters about the cliché that a real man has to be geared up at all times, and to country women about seduction starting long before going to bed. She demonstrates with a real model couple how we can learn to channel our arousal and reprogramme our body and mind for sex.

Background:

If IT does not work – finding words for the most natural thing on earth.

All of us can learn about it or have questions.

A few generations after the musings of Beate Uhse and Oswalt Kolle, one would think that Germans were sexually educated. Especially now that satisfaction seems only one mouse click away. The Internet evokes an image of an open minded society, but are people truly happy with themselves, their relationships, their sexuality? Have they managed to find a way to communicate about it?

Not really, says Ann-Marlene Henning, couple therapist, sexologist and author of the novel MAKE LOVE, published in May 2012. Her research revealed how astonishingly little men and women know about their own sexuality, not to mention that of their partners. Lack of communication, especially about sex, is a very common reason to end a relationship.

Since its publication, MAKE LOVE has remained on the Amazon bestsellers list and even been translated into 20 languages. There is a large desire to talk AND learn more about sexuality, love and relationships. In current times, when one out of five German lives alone, when children watch porn, when humans live to be older and more active, dialogue about sexuality and relationships is achieving a new found importance.

Together with host and sex and relationship expert Ann-Marlene Henning we create a classy, spirited and natural TV-format. It works trimedially and is augmented by internet and radio material. Finding a language for the most natural thing on earth is our central goal. MAKE LOVE creates a unique, exciting and emotional experience which is relevant and which many people can relate to. High-quality, visually aesthetic, documentary, poetic, entertaining and close to people’s realities.

Central idea of the format: You can learn how to make love.

Of course this includes all forms of sexuality, different kinds of relationships as well as all age groups in an equal manner.

  • WAZ, 17.04.15

"Ann-Marlene Henning (...) is one of the few distinguished female experts in this male-dominated branche. Germany's answer to the famous US-therapist Ruth Westheimer, 86; that's what colleagues are calling her half appreciatively, half jokingly. She is manages to do what only a few colleagues have done: bridging the gap between science and practice. (...) Ann-Marlene Henning (...) moves confidently and with a certain lightness that you as a student would have wished for in your biology teacher: approachable but not chummy; sober but not dry; with a wink but without exposing the couples to ridicule."

  • Süddeutsche Zeitung, 06.11.2014

"The psychologist Ann-Marlene Henning has given a very special ring to the issue of sex: somewhere between funny and serious, never offhand or silly."

  • Der Tagesspiegel, 28.10.2014

“A five part series that wanted to guide men and women to new sexual heights: very bold, considerate enough and actually uninhibited. gebrueder beetz filmproduction's five films came as some kind of manual. ... Neuropsychologist, couples therapist and best selling author Ann-Marlene Henning knows what to do - and how to do it. The Dane is hosting the three new episodes again. She has the necessary tact and sensitivity to get the couples and protagonists to confide in her and reveal themselves to the audience; the sequel, like the original series, has people talking instead of drooling, at first tentatively, then less inhibited.(...) Ann-Marlene Henning's (...) trustworthy personality, her unintrusive competence rounds off intimacy without obtrusion, additional value without a price tag."

  • NDR Mein Nachmittag, 24.10.2014

„Ann-Marlene Henning knows exactly how sex can get better ... who actually likes talking about sex? Sexologist Ann-Marlene Henning gives tipps in her programme and her counselling office.“

  • NDR Talkshow, 24.10.2014

"Ann-Marlene Henning wrote Make Love, a book everyone tried to get their hands on, it became a best seller. Now she has delivered again by writing a sex education book for adults... In 2013, the sexologist made the news with the documentary series Make Love. It will be continued this autumn."

  • Stern, 2.10.2014

"Ann-Marlene Henning is on her way to becoming a German Ruth Westheimer ... she has found a very own language for the topic of sex - explicit without being pornographic; empathetic without being presumptuous; always funny, never embarassing. A voice like this has been missing from the public debate ... Henning's new book was realesed on 30 September: "Make More Love." ... The TV series of the same title will be broadcast on MDR from 16 November."

  • Focus, 21.10.2013

"Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) and Südwestfunk (SWR) are daring. They are starting a new kind of show - probably one of the bravest and most provocative German productions since very long time. (...). Despite or just because of the and explicite scenes of genitals. The result is refreshing just like expert and host of the show Ann-Marlene Henning and her book: Surprising, informative and real."

  • Zeit, 17.10.2013

"Henning is the reason why this show works. She asks simple questions and gets unusually intimate answers. Henning knows how to act in front of a camera with naturally, in a way which many professional TV hosts don’t master."

  • Zeit, 17.10.2013

"Yes, you need to be brave to this kind for this kind of format. It's a good thing the MDR was brave. It is good as well, that MDR works with the right kind of people. These right people are: Ann-Marlene Henning, who is the host of the show and Christian Beetz, the producer. Christian Beetz is the CEO of Berlin based production company gebrueder beetz, which produced documentaries for ARTE and BBC amongst others, including films about Richard Wagner, Nelson Mandela and Beethoven. They won the well-respected and famous Grimme Award tree times."

  • „The first episode, which just aired in Berlin, avoids all kinkiness, greasiness, sleaziness inherent to this subject.”

  • “The style is sober, the tone matches the one of a self help book - every third programme cooking show has more emotional depth”.

  • „Butter sex with the MDR! At least after 10pm. Only then airs this show, both seriously revealing and unrivalled in its format.“

  • „Make Love –Learn how to improve your love life“ is a 5-part series which starts on November 3 on MDR and on November 6th on SWR, airs every Sunday/Wednesday.“

  • Tagesspiegel, 24.10.2013

„Sometimes the job of an film critic is discomforting. For instance, if a production needs to be defended against its critics. Or if the critic thinks that it needs to be defended, like in the case of this new 5-part series „Make Love – Learn how to make love“. It’s about sex. It’s something completely ordinary and then again - it’s not. (...). MDR and SWR television have created and produced a format, confronts the viewer with this topic, both visually and acoustically. This documentary, created by three times Grimme-awarded producer Christian Beetz, is intelligently and carefully uses statistics, which clarify the relevance of the content.“
