Dancing in Auschwitz? Filming in gas chambers? Snapping selfies on graves? Bad taste – or no problem at all? #uploading_holocaust is a multimedia web project to find out how teenagers deal with the remembrance of the Holocaust today and how they imagine a modern commemorative culture in the digital age.

What does the Holocaust mean for us today? #uploading_holocaust approaches this question by combining video material with an interactive questionnaire. The videos are based on original YouTube material filmed by Jewish Israeli students who go on the so called “Journey to Poland” every year: a week-long school trip to track down their ancestor’s history who died in Poland during the Holocaust. The students film their impressions and upload the videos on YouTube, giving an authentic and moving glimpse of their dealing with the past.

During the web project we confront German-speaking teenagers with these videos of Israeli students, causing them to reflect their own attitude towards the Holocaust. How relevant is this topic for the 4th generation? Which taboos and expectations are weighing on teenagers nowadays? Can German-speaking youngsters comprehend the emotions of their Israeli counterparts? What tensions still exist today between the descendants of the victimized and the perpetrator societies?

The users answer questions concerning different topics and get a real time visualisation after every answer that sets their opinion in relation to that of others. When a whole class registers for the project, the attitudes of them as a group can be looked at and discussed in class. We will publish the complete results of all users at the end of January 2017, on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The intention of #uploading_holocaust is to check on the alleged lack of interest of teenagers regarding the Holocaust and to start a conversation about the possibilities of how to deal with this topic – not only in class, with one’s family or on social media but moreover even beyond borders.

#uploading_holocaust is part of a cross media project: the related documentary #uploading_holocaust by Udi Nir and Sagi Bornstein had its world premiere at DOK Leipzig IFF on November 2, 2016. The film is exclusively made of the Israeli’s video material that was published with the tag “journey to Poland” on YouTube.
